Hi John

Thanks for posting about this. I have exactly the same symptoms and went to my GP today (I live in Scotland). The parotid gland was mentioned but she seemed unsure as to what it was. I have been given a week's antibiotics and told to come back if it doesn't get any better. Having just eaten dinner my right jaw has swollen up and feels very hard. My husband's just gone to the local shop to get some sour sweets so I'm trying that now.

Thank you so much for your post - isn't the internet wonderful!

For me, it's a problem of being overwhelmed with social networking. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, my blog, MySpace (for those still living in the past), and now something new to check in on and update and devote head space to? It's just too much, even when things are interlinked. It's becoming quantity over quality, for sure.

Hi
Im so glad to find this site!! Last night I ate some rice..then sat down to eat a small piece of pumpkin pie...I took 2 bites and all of a sudden my face on the right side started to swell and just that weird feeling that comes when you eat! Anyhow, today i found this site and I started drinking the water..applies warm compresses and got sour candy...When I eat anything including the candy it swells and gets hard..I put the compress on and after 30 mins. or so its soft again..Does anyone know if the heat helps?? Let me know..PLEASE..Its freaking me out...
Thanks everyone who posts..I would hate to have to visit a surgeon only to be told to do what Im doing already..

I have been dealing with this too. First time it happened, I was eating lunch this past summer with my mom. The only way for me to describe is it felt like I was trying to blow up a little tiny balloon and it was making my left cheek hurt. It swelled pretty good but by the time I got to my doc, it was almost down. He gave me antibiotics. I of course, decided to wait to see if it happened again and then would get the rx filled. Everything was great for a little over a week and then it came back but this time it went from 0 to 60 w/in 24hrs and I could not take the pain. I ended up being admitted to the hospital for 4 days! Even though it was painful and did not think I needed to be in the hospital, I did not realize the serious of it all. The pain was in my left ear eventually and could have quickly spread to my brain or closed my airway. It's been since August and I have flare ups every day. Nothing as bad as before but I feel it's only a matter of time :(

I just want to say two things. I'm glad yours passed on it's own and you're out of pain. Secondly..THANK YOU! I don't have insurance and can't see a doctor so I was looking all over the internet for something about this problem. I have exactly the symptoms you described having and I'm embarassed to say I was afraid it was a sweeling of the carotid atery at first. I will try the advice you were given and see what happens. The sad part is, I actually just had kidney stones too :-/ I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for putting me at ease about this. I'm very grateful!!!

Oh my gosh!!! I was so excited to run across your blog!!! I had the same thing happen at dinner tonight and it scared me to death! My face swelled up from the time I sat down and started eating within 2 minutes. And the feeling was something I couldn't describe either. My kids asked what was wrong because I kept touching the side of my face. Then they both freaked out when they saw how quickly it swelled. I instantly googled and started drinking water. Now I'm out to buy sour candy! I have a ton of saliva in my mouth when I gently massage the swollen area, so don't really know what that means except for "it's not blocked" I gather from reading your posts. I think I am dehydrated and do drink alot of caffeine which I am cutting out starting now. Thank you so much John!!! Many blessings to you for helping me out. :) Hope you are still doing well. Thanks, Norma

Hi James -

I too sometimes am amazed that after four years I still have people commenting on this post. I'm glad that my experiences - and those of the other commenters - are still helpful to others who find themselves facing this bizarre ailment.

I didn't feel a stone either when I experienced this - but had almost exactly what you described. I would eat and instantly swell up like a balloon on one side of my face. It didn't hurt particularly bad, but it was most certainly uncomfortable.
