I’m sitting here writing this before the days events start. There’s about 20 minutes left before the other people who are flying out here to Baltimore this morning arrive, and a half hour after that our meetings start. I’m spending the time catching up on things in the world, doing some light reading to prepare for the day and thought I would take a moment to write on here.
I’m not a fan of this computer. In lieu of taking my personal laptop (a Macbook Pro) with me on this trip, I am using an HP Compaq 8510p that came pre-installed with Vista Business Premium. When I first booted the computer yesterday to get it set up to accompany me on this trip, it immediately told me it needed to install software. For the next hour and a half it sat chugging along installing software, periodically rebooting and occasionally asking me for input. At one point it asked me to log into windows and I thought “Finally, it’s over and I can use this beast” only to find that once it accepted the login information it started installing even MORE software, with absolutely no way to stop the process. As I mentioned before, it took about 1.5 hours for this to complete. Why this process could not be done BEFORE shipping the laptop, I will never know. It seems a bit ridiculous to me when you compare it to the startup time for an Apple Macbook, a machine you take out of the box, turn on and….. it starts working right away with about 3-5 minutes to set up a user account and register the machine (if you want).
The second thing I noticed, and this isn’t neccesarily the fault of HP (and by not neccesarily I mean not at all), is that IE7 doesn’t display my website correctly. I don’t know exactly why this is the case, nor do I currently have plans to try to resolve the issue. I don’t use IE7 unless I absolutely have to, and there are a plethora of other (better) browsers out there that display my site just fine – including Safari, Firefox, Camino and Flock (to name just four).
Tonight we may go to a baseball game to see the Orioles and the Yankees play – if we get done early enough.

Wow…sorry to hear you got a Vista notebook…now that I work at a place where I don’t have to use Vista I don’t miss it…still waiting for my iMac though.
