Productivity is a wonderful thing

For a few days I’ve had a few projects in mind to fill my free time. Unfortunately for me, and the projects, I’ve also found it incredibly difficult to find the motivation to actually DO the projects. I WANTED to do them, yet they seemed to involve so much effort to get started I just couldn’t convince myself to do them. Until today.
I finally, thankfully, found the motivation. I’ve spent time organizing my basement – cleaning up the pile of stuff leftover from pulling proxito’s servers out of colo, organizing the cables, finding a place to store the rapid rails until I can get a cabinet to put my servers in (if anybody knows of a small cabinet that can hold ~ 8U’s of equipment that won’t cost me a ton of money, preferably with wheels, please leave a comment). I’m getting rid of the equipment I no longer need, like a nice giant CRT monitor I won’t ever use again, as well.
While doing this I got my two 16 port managed gigabit switches up and running to support the multitude of computing devices I’m supplying connectivity for.
I also have taken the time to move some videos I have into digital format to go on my AppleTV, and set up a NFS file server that also doubles as a linux iTunes server using mt-daapd.
Next I’m going to set up an internal wiki, and get zeroconf setup on all of my machines so I can ssh to them without having to a.) set up an internal dns server or b.) remember their IP addresses.
I now have 3 of 6 servers operating, though two are going to be only lightly used.
My plans for the other three servers are unknown yet, but I am considering turning one of them into a backup server using Amanda. It’s pretty trivial for me to do now , as I’ve done it before and remember most of the process.
Now it’s time to clean a few more things up, then take a shower before Ann gets here so we can go to the grocery store and an office supply store.
